Meet Dumebi, one of Nigeria fast rising
female up and coming artist who has devoted lots of her time and energy into
perfecting her skills and talent, with a unique voice, different style and something fresh to offer.
In her interview with our correspondent, the amazing singer open up some fact
about her music, and how her mom has been the source of her inspiration.
Who
is Dumebi?
Full
name Dumebi Nwafor, young female from eastern Nigeria. Amazing singer,
song-writter and performer.
Why
do you go for your Real name? Why not something swaggad?
Ma
real name has got all the swag I need. I love to be real and unique. That’s my
style.
Hmmm,
interesting. Now let's face the music professionally, how do you start?
Just
like most artistes would say, I too started singing in the choir at age 8. I
started writing my own songs as a teenager, Mom being a music teacher I got all
the support and encouragement I needed. I tried several talent hunt shows like
Nigerian Idols etc where I got up to top 80.. Then I decided to pursue my music
career full time after graduating from the university in 2009.
Cool.
2009 till now, how can you describe the journey so far?
Its
not been easy, but the passion keeps me going. My songs have received favorable
reviews and enjoyed constant radio airplay and internet downloads. I am encouraged
by the appreciation and love I receive from my fans, the TopnaijaMusic award I
won in december 2012 is also a proof that I am growing stronger, that is why I
challenge myself to do better.. Music lovers should watch out for me, I am just
getting started.
I
became one of your fan when I listen to SELENSE, what inspired you to drop that
cool song?
Lol..
Aww.. Thanks dear... Selense ting na long story oo.. Back in the days my mom
used to call me "selense baby" because of the way I do my things..
You know I take my time, put my own special style and swag.. So she used to
tease me about it back then that it became a kind of nickname.. So when I wanted
to drop a first single, I thought that would make a big bang.. Which it did.
Thanks
to mom for SELENSE.
You
can say that again oo..lol
As
a beautiful female singer, how do cope with your fans on social network?
As
for my fans.. The love I get from them is soo wonderful!.. We interract, I keep
them updated on anything am upto and they show support all the time. A fan once
did something dt overwhelmed me once.. I had a show last December "TVC
splash" and there was this guy who had come all the way from Abuja to Lagos
just to watch my performance. Well, I maintain a good relationship from them, I
appreciate them all because without them I wouldn't have come this far.
In
Nigeria, female artistes experience less attention, only few make the headline,
are you bothered with this?
Not
really, I think it seems females don't make as much waves because our Nigerian music
industry is very male dominated, I believe that it doesn't matter whether you
are male or female, if you are truely talented and you have the right push, you
will make it and I will be one of the success stories, am working towards it
already.
So
recently, do you have any new song?
Yes,
I dropped a song title "Kill me Die" some months ago that has been
doing well.. But my latest job is a song titled "Sunset In Paradise"
which is also the official movie soundtrack of a Nollywood movie currently
trending in cinemas nationwide titled "Murder At Prime suites". The
song will be dropping soon officially along with a music video, so guys, please
watch out for Sunset In Paradise by Dumebi!
Cool,
can't wait for that to drop.
Yes,
soon enough keep your fingers crossed.
Alright,
speaking about the life of celeb, going clubbing, from one show to another,
what has stardom change about you?
Lol..
Its fun but it comes with its ups and downs.. People you have never met know
and recognize you and its a good feeling. Showbiz requires a lot of time and
commitment too because you have to work hard to be on top of your game and its
challenging but rewarding. I am still the same person I have always been, when
I eventually reach the height I am working towards, I will still remain my
humble self.
Cool.
Future now, where do you see yourself in 4years time?
I
have a very huge dream for my music. In the future, I see myself becoming a household
name, living legend in Nigerian music also recognized on the international
music scene.. as a multiple award winner and an inspiration to young talents.
Amen
to that!
Double
Amen my brother!
Any
dream collaboration?
There
are several artistes I admire and would love to work with.. Lemme just name a
few. 2face, Vtek, psquare, Dare, Omawumi, Flavour.. My dear, the list is long..
lol
Is
Dumebi single or Married?
I
am very single..
Do
you have any record label deal?
Not
yet, right now I am an independent, unsigned artiste.
How
can your fans get you on social media?
They
should like my facebook page www.facebook.com/dumebi.music . They can
also follow me on twitter @dumebilea . I really enjoy connecting with
them.
Any
advice for the youths out there?
Stay
in school, education is important.. Then be true to yourself, pursue your
dreams and you can achieve anything to set your mind to.
Finally,
you've been nominated preliminarily for GBAM Awards Female Act Of the year, and
SELENSE for Song of the Year, how do you feel about this, and what are your
expectations?
I
am happy about being nominated because it shows that my work is being
appreciated, my expectations are pretty high because I know winning this award
would help push me to the next level and be another feather on my hat, am
hoping on the votes of my fans who have had my back all these time and I know
they wouldn't let their girl down.
Thanks
you for your time
Appreciate
it
